Relaxation Techniques: A Practical Handbook for the Health Care Professional | Churchill Livingstone | 2005-02-13 | ISBN: 044307447X | 300 pages | PDF |

The 3rd edition of Relaxation Techniques provides the health care professional with a practical introduction to a variety of approaches to relaxation, both somatic and cognitive, that may contribute to patient care. Each technique is easy to teach and use, and has been demonstrated effective in the clinical situation. The background theory to each method is also described and its rationale spelled out, thus helping the clinician to select the appropriate technique. All the methods included are suitable for use with both small groups and individuals.

* Focuses on the practical aspects of relaxation techniques.
* Aimed at clinicians for use with patients/clients.
* Gives the background theory to each technique.
* Includes cognitive approaches (e.g. self -awareness, imagery, autogenics, meditation, and positive self-talk).
* Includes somatic approaches (e.g. progressive relaxation, stretchings, and the Mitchell method).
* Discusses the advantages and pitfalls of each method.
* Evidence based and fully referenced.

* Two new chapters on cognitive behavioral approaches and other techniques – including yoga, Eastern methods, body awareness therapy, massage, aromatherapy, and reflex therapy.
* 2-color design throughout.
* Most line drawings are redrawn in 2-color.

Reviewer:Michael Archambeau, MEd, PT(Private Practice)
Description:This relatively compact book provides a thorough overview of major theories and techniques of cognitively and physically inducing relaxation response.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide in-depth presentations on an extensive array of relaxation theories and techniques, while providing the reader with practical information on using the methods and techniques to reduce physiological arousal and induce relaxation responses in patients or oneself. The book is a late but timely addition to discussion of how stress in our society, and in ourselves, may affect one’s health and well being.
Audience:The book is primarily intended for allied health professionals (physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, social workers, and counselors), although the author believes it may also be of use to medical professionals and psychologists.
Features:Features of the book include appropriate charts and photographs to help illustrate processes, theories, movements, etc., associated with specific techniques in the text. The references are extensive and up-to-date, including recent research attempts to validate application of techniques and theory. They would be useful to anyone seeking more information regarding efficacy of use of specific techniques.
Assessment:The book provides a good overview and gives outlines and suggestions for using specific relaxation techniques. However, by the nature of the subject matter, the book provides only general suggestions as to what techniques might benefit a specific population or individual. Eachchapter flows nicely and is readily comprehensible to both the professional and lay reader. The book could be helpful to the intended professional population as a primer on both theory and a common sense approach to relaxation techniques, which may be useful in stress management or certain musculoskeletal pain conditions. However, it would seem to be more appropriately used as an educational tool for the patients of the professionals mentioned above, particularly those with pain conditions exacerbated or perpetuated by high levels of physiologic arousal.
